Usually the direction of thread installation follows this general pattern: left, down, up, down, into the hook end, into the needle. Another threading method is a thread post, pulling, lifting a pick, needle, using a thread guide. The thread stud is where the ball of thread is placed, the thread is pulled from the spool, the pick-up lever receives the extra thread (for the upper thread to loop around the bobbin case), backs up and is ready to sew the next stitch.
The thread may enter the needle from the left, right, or front and back. If the needle is threaded, you can see an indication of which direction to thread; if not, the last thread guide position before threading the needle is usually closest to the direction you must thread.
